About This Chapter
The next morning, Hiroshi wakes up to find that he has won an eating contest at a place called "Jumbo Shangri-La" . He's so excited that he's going to take a nap and then compete in the eating contest. Hiroshi tells his friend that the food at the place is so good that even the loser is going to feel good about himself for eating so well. The guy who eats all the way up feels proud, and the guy who only eats half of the meal feels proud. The narrator tells us that the practice of "stake eating" started when drivers started coming to eat large portions of food in order to get their money's worth out of the economy. In other words, people started eating large portions because they were hungry and wanted to impress their friends. So, they ate at this place to get money out of their friends, and now they're going to eat here to get even more money from their friends because they've won the "eating contest." Hiroshi is psyched to be competing with someone for his breakfast, and he wants to make sure that he doesn't bump into the guy from the ramen stand. He wants to know why he can't be friends with him, and why he shouldn't eat with him. He tells Hiroshi that the guy is called "the ramen man" , and that he eats all kinds of different kinds of food, including the super-large, super-duper-simmered noodles that Hiroshi has just tasted. He says that the ramen man is a "super-juicy soy sauce base" ramen with extra-pork slices , which makes Hiroshi drool. He goes on to say that the man is eating a five-baller
