This chapter's epigraph comes from the poem "Tap tap mi tap" , which means "I am going to make my immortal servant" . It's a quote from a poem by the same name. It says that the fates of the two immortals are bound together, and that once they die, they'll be involved in some kind of misfortune. Translation: Once you die, you're going to have a lot of bad luck. The immortals can't do anything about it, so they've got to figure out a way to survive. They're not going to be able to do anything for each other, though, because the universe isn't big enough for them. So they have to survive for their own sake, and then they can take care of one another better. That's what the poem is all about. The narrator asks the immortal servant if he'd like to be his immortal servant, too. He says he would like to follow the immortals, too, but he's not like them.
