In this chapter, we learn that David's father was a famous chef, and that his mother was a successful entrepreneur. David was born in a noble German family, but his father died in a drunken accident when David was only eight years old. David blames his mother for the accident, but she was too busy to manage her marriage life. In order to find inspiration for his cooking, his father became a "total alcoholic" , and died of a fall from drinking. David is shocked that his father's final gift to him was rosemary, which turns out to be his last gift to his father.
