About This Chapter
The scene opens with Dr. Rivers talking to his patient, a black Lab puppy, who has been bitten by a rattlesnake. The dog is very agitated, and the doctor tries to calm him down, but the puppy refuses to calm down. Rivers tells the dog that the rattlesnake has bitten him, and that he has to be careful not to try to jump out of the window. Rivers then tells the puppy that he is the "foolhardiest" patient he has ever treated, and asks the puppy why he is so upset. The puppy tells Rivers that he was afraid of the dog, and Rivers tells him that the dog's fear of him is due to the fact that it is chained up to a short leash. Rivers says that if the dog had been chained up like this, he would have gone crazy, too. He also says that the leash is a chain link, which means the dog will spend its life chained to the leash. He says that he would go crazy too, if he were chained up that way. Rivers asks the dog why he thinks people invented the leash, and he says, "ugh, ugh, clank . . clank... clank." Rivers says he was going to "splash some cold water" on the dog if he did not wake up, but he says he left the window open so the dog could crawl out. He tells the pup that he left some anesthetics in the room to bring him to the hospital while he was asleep, and when he woke up, he was very upset. He asks the pup why he was so upset, and she says that it was cuter that he tried to escape. Rivers scolds the puppy for jumping to conclusions, and says that she is the fool-hardiest of all the dogs he has treated. She says that her wounds are completely healed,
