This chapter opens with a flashback to a time when the Ming family lived on their own. They had a rule that if a person joined the Ming clan, he or she could not leave. However, a young man joined the clan because he wanted to marry a woman. The woman turned him down because she found him to be her lover. The young man went to the Ming ancestral tomb and traded his soul for the woman's. This young man's family was harassed by the curses of the Ming because of the woman.
