In this chapter, the narrator pretends to have never heard the story of the murder. He asks the murderer if he knows anything about the police chief. The murderer replies that he does not. The narrator tells the murderer that he should have waited five years before revealing the details of the crime to the public. Instead, he says, he gave the information to the murderer knowing that he would not be able to execute the crime. He tells the man to keep his mouth shut and not to cause a scene. The man replies that it is fun watching his downfall. He invites the murderer over to his house for dinner and tells him to make himself at home
