In this chapter, Shallow reflects on his father's handling of the situation. He realizes that he has placed Shallow in a position of power, but that Shallow's father has not been able to do anything for him. Shallow asks his father if he believes he has the ability to fulfill his obligation to Shallow, and Shallow replies that he does. He asks if Shallow needs any more therapy, but Shallow does not know if there is a problem. He says that he thinks Shallow is eating well, sleeping well, and is back to writing. He advises Shallow to use his tongue more, and to apply more pressure to his throat when and if he coughs. He concludes that he must have pushed Shallow too much for his first time, but he was "unsurprised very obedient
