About This Chapter
The narrator introduces us to Yuzu, a new guest at the inn. He introduces himself as a country bumpkin from the mountains who came to the town of Konohanatei to find a job. He tells us that the people at the hotel aren't like him, because they're very elegant and don't treat him any better than they treat the country bumpkins. Yuzu tells the narrator that he's sorry he hasn't introduced himself yet. He's new to the area, and he'd like to get to know the town better. He asks the innkeeper to give him a tour of the town, since it's full of hotels. The innkeeper tells him that the town is a hot-springs inn, where travelers can stay and rest. He also tells Yuzu that his name is Yuzu and that he came to visit for an appreciably high-paying job. The inn's staff are all "country bumpkins" like him. The narrator is shocked to learn that the staff is made up of "foxes" . He says that all of them are "gods" , and that the place is a place where all the gods, spirits, and monsters come together to drink and relax.
