About This Chapter
"Image bliss" is the title of this chapter's opening scene. It's a quote from Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice, in which the hero of the play is a young man who has been wronged by his father. The young man, who is called Nemo, tells the rest of the story of his father's life. He says that his father was willing to kill himself in order to save his family. Nemo's father, however, was not willing to do such a thing. Instead, he took a stand against the mob and became a politician. Nemo says that he's heard rumors that a bathhouse is being built in the area, but that he doesn't want his mother to be scared of the people who run the place. He's also heard that a woman is running for office and that she's using the drugs to get elected. Nemo worries that the women will hurt his mother, but he says that even at home, Nemo saved his family from the mob. He tells Nemo that he will ask his mom to buy a citrus plant. Nemo tells the young man that he loves him, and that he has seen him "fuck up" before. He also says that Nemo has looked "innocent" in the past half-a-dozen times, but tonight, he has never looked more innocent than he has. He asks Nemo if he loves Perry, and if he is in trouble, and he says no, but if Perry is in something that Perry could get "good good" out of, then he'll tell him everything.
