About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that suicide is a bad idea, because it's not going to create love. He's sure that if he had died, he wouldn't have been able to fall in love with Mina. He tells Mina that if she had killed herself on a beautiful day like this, she would be forgiven. The narrator also tells us about the cherry tree in front of Mina's school. It's a symbol of spring, which means that everything is going to get better. Mina says that she gave the tree a name: "pink young company president" . Mina tells the narrator that she's offering him 50 yen, which is about 50 cents less than it would cost to kill herself. Mina thinks that the world is full of hope, but she knows that money is the only thing that keeps people alive. She says that Mina is trying to get taller, but he's too short for her. Mina reminds him that his father tried to get him to be taller, too, but it didn't work out. Mina and the narrator run into each other in the hallway, and Mina realizes that the man from the morning is the same man she met earlier in the day. She realizes that he is not Mina, but the guy from the day before.
