Back at the estate, the Governess tells Lockwood that she's there because she heard about the situation at the mansion. Lockwood says that he's not worried, since he promised to see Rebecca "to her end" . The Governess says that she can't leave her daughter alone in such a terrible situation. She tells Lockwood to go back to the estate immediately, since she'll be there for Rebecca's safety. She also tells him that she is Lockwood's wife, and that he looks pretty. She says that the turn of events wasn't what she expected it to be. She's always been a coward, she says, and now she has to deal with people from her past. She begs Lockwood to give her the boy they met at the end of Chapter 1 . He's the son they met when they first met, and Lockwood is sorry that Rebecca has forgotten about him. He says that they'll have to stop and rest, since they're both going to die. He can walk on his own, he says, even if things are bad.
