About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the "fruit jam kitchen princess" is the " flan prince" of the novel, and that she is the daughter of Mizuno, the owner of the "lavender house." The scene opens with the narrator asking the reader to imagine what it must be like to be Mizuano's daughter. The narrator tells us that she spent her childhood summers at the lavender house, but that she didn't have the artistic skills to create a "splash page" like the one in the novel. She also tells us, however, that if she ever had a bad experience at the house, she would "never forgive" the owner for it, and she promises to help her no matter what happens. A few days later, the narrator receives a call from Mizumi asking him to come to Mizumi's office after class to prepare snacks for a dinner party that Mizumi is organizing. Mizumi tells the narrator that the dinner party will be attended by famous food critics, and Mizumi says that she will prepare the snacks for the party. She tells Mizumi that the director of the school has asked her to participate in the party, but Mizumi doesn't believe her, and he tells her that the food will be a competition between Mizumi and her employer, "the lavender house."
