About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a flashback to a conversation between Dr. Manette and the Governess. The Governess tells Manette that she'd like to know what's going on with the baby, since she's worried that the baby will grow up to be a monster. The flashback is interrupted by the sound of a trumpet, and then the narrator tells the audience that he's just seen the baby grow up. He's not sure how big the baby is, but he figures it's about 20 weeks old. He figures the baby's "tiny nose and ears" are the reason for the flashback. The narrator says he'd put his money on the idea of using his own dna to create a new baby, if not for the fact that the process would be faster and more reliable. He also says that if the scientists didn't want to destroy the baby before it was born, they could use his dna instead. But the narrator doesn't think that's a good idea, since the baby might be "reset" as a new-born baby. He says that the only way to stop the baby from growing too big is to kill the man who created the baby. If the scientists don't kill the baby now, he says, then they'll have to kill it after they destroy the jellyfish. He thinks the baby looks a lot like him, and he can't help but feel sorry for him.
