About This Chapter
At the beginning of the second chapter, the narrator tells us that he and his friend, Shinya, have decided to join the Kendo club and become members of the karate club. They've decided that they're going to train together, and they've also decided that their goal is to get a second-year student to teach them. The two of them talk about the fact that they haven't been training together for a while, and that they don't really know each other yet. Shinya tells the narrator that he's already decided which karate club he'll be joining, and he says that he wants someone to teach him. He wants someone who'll teach him how to attack, not just how to spar. He's worried that the coach is going to treat him badly, because he doesn't like to be treated badly. The coach, however, is serious, honest, and passionate. The young man says that the goal is three seconds, and the coach should give him something more fun to do with the time. He says he wants to continue this to row, but that tomorrow he has to do something else. He wonders why the coach didn't come to the training at night, and why he suddenly came to the club at all. He also wonders why Shinya isn't doing the same thing as the other students. He thinks that they should help each other out to get stronger, because it's not the coach's job to get the student stronger. He tells the young man to go home already, because tomorrow's tournament will be decided on how strong the student is.
