About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of the "Pyramid" of ogres who work at a brewery. The narrator explains that the company does not hire children because they do not fit the mold of a typical ogre. He also explains that it is difficult to tell the age of an ogre simply by looking at its appearance. An adult ogre is one who has done a great deal of part-time work. The other half of the company is made up of half-orphans who have been brought up by their parents. They are all called "oboro guruma" because they are from the same family. They all live in the freezing hells, which are described in great detail in the chapter. The chapter ends with the narrator lamenting the fact that there are dead people all over the place.
