This chapter opens with a description of a man named Ono, or "King Ono," who was once a judge in the court of ten kings. Ono is also known as "King Enmamura," and he is the first judge of the dead. He tells the story of how he was mistaken for King Enma every time he met him, and how he used to climb down a well at night to assist the king in his judgments. The man is described as being "over 180 cm tall , and as an unrivalled penman ." He is also said to have been a "shoop sh150 w oww" , or an ogre. On the other hand, Ono says, he is not an ogre at all. He asks if he can borrow his identity to see the inner sanctum of the court.
