About This Chapter
The ants are afraid of the fire, and the men have to stay in the place for half an hour. They need to get out, but they don't know what to do. They rub the poison into the men's bodies to keep them cool, and they decide that it's better to die in the hot sun than in the fire. They're worried that they'll be bitten by the ants, and that they won't be able to escape. They decide that they need to leave the place as soon as possible, but the ants can't do that, because the temperature is too high. The men decide that the best thing to do is to rub the poisoned bodies into the iron coffin and wait for the ants to die. They don' t want to be bothered with their grudges, they just want to die together. The ants think they've found another way to kill the men. They realize that there is a dry corpse in the coffin, which they can use to trap the ants and kill the emperor. They also realize that the ants are planning to kill them on the fifth of July, the lantern festival day, when the emperor will be at the city tower to watch over the corpses with the gu insects. They wonder if they're the monsters who chased them in the forest, or if they are the ants who have been preparing the corpses for the assassination of the emperor
