In this chapter, the young narrator explains his family's history. When he was four years old, his parents divorced, and he and his mother moved to the town of eastlake, Texas, where they live with their father, a surgeon, who lives several hours away. When the family moved to Texas, his mother wanted him to attend a Jewish school, but he is now attending a Catholic school because no one in his family is even Christian.
