About This Chapter
"Tokyo Pop Trials of dinah" In this short scene, we learn that the new leader of the Freemasons, Eminiel, and his wife, Lali, are on their way to the town of Tokyo, in northeastern Turkey, where they plan to set up a temporary camp. They're going to try to get rid of some of the trees that have sprung up around the town's main library, and they're also going to make sure that the town doesn't burn down. The two men are going to go to the nearby olive garden to buy some bread, and then they'll head back to the city. The narrator tells us that this is the first time he's been in Tokyo in a long time, and it's because of the "hetka" that he is here today. He remembers her standing under a tree with a rope around her neck, and carving all over the town with religious sayings and rhetoric. She threw part of the rope away, presumably because she was afraid of what would happen to her if she tried to burn down the town. He also remembers that they were down in their "safe haven" talking about a recent lesson when the fire started, and that they had to get out of there quickly. They need to get to the top of the tower to see what's going on, and Lali tells them to stand down and wait for her. She's not mad at her anymore, she says, and she's happy to see them. She tells him that she'll try to help them, but they need to be patient with her. Lali asks why they won't help the town, and the narrator tells her that there's no "finery" to be had there. He says that he often thinks back on when he was alive, and he likes Lali because she is so sympathetic to everyone. He tells her to stay where she is, and not to harm "lady hetka," who has no pity for anyone.
