About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the angel is in disguise as a human being. He's disguised as a ghost, and he's trying to find the twenty white portals that lead to the halls of the mausoleum. He tries to find each of the twenty portals, but they're all empty. The angel tells us that the only way to find all of the souls in the mausoleum is to "unearth each one . . and each soul and mind . blessed courage . " The angel says that he and the other ghost-hunters can't find each other because they don't have a contract with each other. They're just like "cracker jack prizes" . The first ten are easy, the angel says, and the last ten are hard. He explains that the other day, his arm showed that the mausoleum had its brand on it, because he helped Diana. He says that if Diana stops coming back to the mausoleum, the brand won't show up again. He tells her to grab a bench so he can explain to her what's going on. The ghosts are like "static on a radio" , he says, interfering with the lives of the people around them. The only way they can interfere is by getting a human agent to do the job. The human agent has to go to the vault and solve the ghosts' dreams. If the ghost fails, he gets "assimilated into the mausoleum" as a "one of the cleaners." The angel explains that they have a "contract" with Diana, so they can do whatever they want with her. She's free to go anywhere in the world.
