The narrator is on his way to the subway when he runs into the pant leg of the man he's just met on the street. The pant leg is carrying an umbrella, and the narrator is annoyed that the man doesn't show up at the studio to finish his manuscript. He's late for dinner, and he wants to get out of the way of his uncle, who's been spouting nonsense about the seaside. The narrator can't understand why the man isn't there to finish the manuscript, since he was out walking with a friend. He wants to know what's going on, since the man is standing around giving out free food and drinks. The pants leg tells the narrator to hurry up and eat, because it's getting late. He asks the pants leg if he can have a bite to eat, and she tells him that she's having dinner with another
