About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a soliloquy by the vampire, who tells the reader that he's been growing more and more like his white roots. He says that even if he doesn't marry, there are still people out there looking for a mate. He tells the story of how he lost his "pairing partner" a few years ago. The vampire explains that he has a "sweet cedar" , which smells like "vampire blood" . He also says that he hasn't been able to find a "partner" since he was born. He's a "regular saint" who likes to "pray to people" and that he likes to be pampered. The narrator says that the narrator must be a "blabber mouth" because he didn't feel the same way about his feelings for the vampire. He adds that he thinks the vampire must have fallen asleep in the moonlight and left the room. He wonders why the vampire did not invite him to spend the night with him, and he wonders if he'll be able to "become a star" when he grows up. He thanks darwin for being there, and wonders if they'll ever be friends again. He knows that the emptiness of life after death is something that he can relate to. He wants to say something nice to the vampire about his new reality, but he can't because he has no idea what to say about his past.
