This chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, in which the narrator tells the story of how he came to be in love with the prostitute, and how he fell in love again with her. The narrator tells us that he has been using the prostitute's opium for the past few months, and that she is pregnant. He tells the audience that he is not sure if this is true or not, but he is certain that it is. He also tells them that the prostitute is pregnant, but that he will not reveal her identity until after the baby is born.
