In this chapter, we are introduced to a number of characters who will play important roles in the plot of the novel. The first of these characters is Ching-feng, who has just returned from Hong Kong. He tells the others that he has just received a letter from a man who wants to kill him. He is worried that the man is a hitman, and he asks the others to tell him that he is not responsible for the man's death.
