Olivia tells her father that she wants to marry Edmund, but that she does not want to be "given in charity" . She tells him that she cannot marry Edmund because he is a "soul mate" , someone who protects her, trusts her, loves her, and understands her . Olivia begs her father to take this as her last request to him. She says that Edmund needs someone to "extend his life" and that she can even "do anything for him" if he needs her.
