In this chapter, we learn that the ghost of the village chief is dead. He was with the ghost muskderer when the latter stopped him halfway to save the clearwater. We learn that he has died, and that his body is now in the hands of the moon, who is healing the vines that have been growing in his garden. He asks the men to return to the village and take care of the little girl.
