About This Chapter
The story begins with a flashback to a time when his mother told him a story about a place where angels would take a bath and hang loose on earth. Only a human could enter that place. The narrator tells us that this place was called the "Rainbow Garden" because it was the place where rainbows would always appear. He then tells us the story of how he and his friends would go there every year on his birthday and treat themselves to "mumbo-soup" if he won. He asks who the heck invented this "stupid birthday tradition" . He tells his friends that if he wins, they should treat him "a meatball soup" , but if he loses, they will treat him a "ballgame soup." Okay, so who invented this? Well, it's a guy named Dokey. He's the one who first started this "ballroom soup" thing. Dokey says he's going to find the scarf, but first he has to find out who the girl who took the scarf is. He says she's wearing pants, so she must have been hiding the scarf. The girl fumbles the scarf and the ball fumbles away. The ball is finally wet, and the girl is freaking out. She's also freaking out because she lost her scarf. She says she wants to know who took it, but the girl doesn't know who she is. She tells Dokey that she can't return to paradise because the girl took
