This chapter opens in the living room of the house of the village chief, where the whole family is gathered for dinner. The village chief tells the children to go to the kitchen and talk to their grandfather. He tells them that he doesn't need their help at all, and that they should just sit down and have a good chat. He says that he's been a village chief before, but he'd never been one before. He's sorry, he says, but it's fine to be a chief. The villagers are all eating from a pot, and the villagers don't seem to know where they're from. This is the first time that the villagers have been eating from the same table, and they've been eating together for a long time.
