"Don't heal, lift my eyes, are sore" , says the demon, who wants to be left alone with Polo. He tells Polo that he's not strong enough for him, but he still remembers how terrible he felt when he met the things he did as a human. He doesn't know how to make Polo feel safe, he says, because he'd rather be a man than share his pain. Polo says that he would be saved if he were to apologize for what he said, but that's just not his responsibility. He's willing to break his bones and burn his soul.
