Back at the boarding house, Carol and Su Ling run into each other. They're both excited to see each other again. Su Ling tells Carol that she's found someone alive at the school and that it's the only time that the school opens its doors to the outside world. This is the first time they've been to the school, so they're excited. They run into Su Ling, who tells them that the smell of spring reminds her of a butterfly. Carol says that she doesn't have that sense of smell, but Su Ling reminds her that she smells like a butterfly too. Carol asks Su Ling if she'd like to go with her to the ball that night, and she says she'll let her go if she wants to. She's not going to let Su Ling go alone.
