This chapter's epigraph comes from a line in the novel's first chapter, in which the monster says, "You're right, your entire clan kowtows to ogus. This guy is a traitor. This is the first time the monster realizes that his entire clan is traitors to him. He wants to kill the black fox as soon as he sees them. He tells himself that it's nice to know that he's not in harm's path. He wonders how it feels to be a "lackey" of "Olus" . He's glad to be on the side of the enemy, since it means that he doesn't have to worry about his own safety. He also wonders how he could have let such an opportunity slip away. He thinks that if he had been a "black fox" , he would have been able to use some kind of "power" to "enhance" his life. He is so excited by the thought of killing a black fox that he can't believe that he hasn't changed into a human being. He feels like he'll be able to turn back the tide of evil, and he wonders what he will do after he realizes that he is a "blood thirsty monster."
