At the banquet hall, King Lear asks his son-in-law, the Dauphin, to meet with the envoys from the Harson state. The Dauphin, however, refuses, saying that it is not proper for him to do so, as he is not interested in the envoy. When the Dauphin asks what he should do, the king replies that he should meet the envoy and meet the harson-speaking prince. He then asks the Dauphin's father, the Duke of Dauphin, if he would like to meet the prince. The father replies that it would be inappropriate, as the prince is a hostage in the country, and the Dauphin should not be interested in him. When he hears that the Dauphin is interested in his son, he is shocked. He says that he has never seen a country as powerful as the Norwegians, and that the king is a wise man. He also says that the prince's speech is in the Harston language, which the Dauphin does not understand. The king says that his country is proud of conquering foreign lands, collecting the treasures of the world, and of being one of the "treasures" that they invited to visit their country.
