In this short chapter, the reader is introduced to a new character, the mushroom. He is a creature of the underworld who has been banished from his home by his master, the mad scientist Juno. Juno has come to find him, and he tells him that he has come because of his book, which Juno believes to be cursed. Juno explains that the book contains a symbol for the blink, a form of magic that allows one to travel from one point in time to another. Juno then tells the story of how he first came to find the mushroom, and how he used the symbol to travel to another place. Juno says that the symbol in the book indicates that he is thinking of a safe place, but he does not know what that means. Juno concludes that the only way to travel is to use thoughts, and that he cannot understand Juno's explanation of the book's meaning.
