About This Chapter
The scene opens with the two of them talking in front of a statue of Madame Bovary. They're both embarrassed by the statue's damage. The statues are made of marble, which is why they're so popular in France. The two are also embarrassed by each other's lack of manners. They both want to know what's wrong with the statue, and the two are interrupted by the sound of someone's voice. It's the maid, who's been cleaning the statue. The maid says she accidentally made the marble crack, and she has to squeeze some liquid into the crack to fix it. She doesn't want to live with the maid because she has a spare room in her dorm, but the maid insists on moving in with her. She wants to know why the maid didn't put the statues in the locker room when she was supposed to, and why she's not allowed to use the bathroom. She's also annoyed by the fact that the maid has a broken phone screen, which means she can't use her phone any more. She says she'll get it repaired the next day, and then she can use it again. She also says that she is not innocent
