The chapter opens with a description of the origin of the human-demon relationship. The narrator explains that demons arose from "the darkness . . arrogant and vicious" . They wanted to "take over" the "holy demons" , the angels , and the land of heaven . The angels were like a mountain with their blood like a river and their corpses like a "bloofer shade of crimson". They taught demons how to think better, how to commu nd with others, and most important of all, they taught them love.
