In this chapter, Bardolph tells the story of his childhood. When he was a young girl, the magics of the gods were linked to the virtue of a virtuous guardian. But then, evil rose took advantage of the weakness of the guardians, and magics were no longer able to protect the people. All knowledge of the magic was lost, and anyone who showed signs that he or she was a guardian was destroyed. Bardolph says that he has learned to expect this behavior from men, and that magic is again being used in the kingdom. He tells Bardolph that he must find the source of his magic and bring it back to him, but that he will show him that he is strong enough to carry out the task.
