About This Chapter
"The children of death, alba, and venora," says the soliloquy's epigraph. "They themselves are banished from the mortal plane," he says, "but they themselves are the ones who stoke the flame of love and hatred in the hearts and minds of the living." The scene opens on a road in the middle of the night, where a fire is burning in the distance. Arlen and Gad Elmaleh have come to sit with them, but they're too drunk to do so. They're angry that they've been forced to live without them, and they blame the people of the city for their behavior. They say that the city is full of "barbarians" who are "stabbed in the back," but they don't blame the city's inhabitants for their actions. They were orphans when they first came to live in the city. They used to run around the city together, and when they didn't have a team to help them, they wouldn't eat. They survived because they were able to rely on one another. Gad El Maleh and Arlen were both orphans, and both of them were chased by royal guards. When they were young, they used to jump from roof to roof, but now they rely on each other for protection. They don1t eat because they didn1t want to be hunted, but that is fine. The executioner, his men, and their friends are coming to retrieve the keystone from the mine. If they fail, they will storm through the city and into the mine, where they will be scorched by the giant spiders of the underworld. They won1
