About This Chapter
The steward of Barra tells his son that wolves have come to speak with him. He tells him that the wolves were friends of his now holding court, his grace, King Anice, and his lady mother, Queen Abigail. The steward says that they have business with the abbot, who is believed to be responsible for the island's plague of beasts. He also says that the steward believes that the black witch is the source of the plague. He says that he will bring the evidence he needs to the queen to find out why she has named him the steward of the realm. He adds that he has no room for the old man, who has been dead for many years. The old man tells the steward that he should remember his allegiance to the barra, and that he would have known it had been the son of the Minotaur. He asks the steward if he recognizes him, and the steward replies that he is too fat to remember him, but that he could use his skills elsewhere. He announces that the queen will have him hire a lopper to fetch the head of "the serpent of the Black bog" . The lopper explains that the great serpent has killed many of his own people, and many have fallen from the castle. He then says that a single warrior has been sleeping in a store house for days, and has gone for food and drink. The young man asks the lopper if he knows the truth, and lopper says yes, he does. The woman says that she saw the man lay the serpent and that the serpent sent the beast to kill them all, but lopper cut the serpent's head off. She begs the steward to hire a swordsman to kill the man. The man agrees to do so.
