About This Chapter
The narrator tells the audience that he is usually fine when he does his shift alone, but that he has had a bad feeling lately and is going to get a drink. He asks if there is anything he can do to help, and is interrupted by the sound of a man shouting, "Jon is dead." The narrator realizes that this is because he has been suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome since he dropped out of college and had to work instead of continuing his studies. He tells the story of his mother's illness and how she had to stay home from work to care for her sick husband. The narrator says that it is fortunate that he found out about the man's "ongoing psychosis sickness," which is when a person is unable to distinguish between reality and hallucination. When a person experiences stress and trauma, he or she can no longer distinguish reality from hallucination. This is why arman was able to attack the narrator.
