About This Chapter
The narrator introduces himself as "Yang fei" . He is 26 years old and works as an ordinary employee at a small company in the mountains. He does not take the old mans words seriously but he does not understand why the water temperature is so cold that day. When he looks back, he realizes that the man has disappeared. He realizes that it is a solid metal weight floating on the water. The old man appears out of nowhere and the narrator starts to panic because of the cold water, the weight, and the strange old man. He also realizes that a child has drowned the day before. He returns the heavy metal weight to the man, but he still refuses to let him go. The narrator is more curious about his experience, as he is from the mountains, and after he arrived at the lake, he realized that the stories people told about drownings were true. He remembers that once a weak body is in the water, a water ghost will catch it as its substitute. This proves that the heart is kind and not a "heaven's sinner" like the little brat. He becomes more interested in the man's identity.
