In the palace, the king's men are gathered around the corpse of Guinevere. The smell of the palace makes them smell "greed and desire" . The demons are coming to the city, and the king has to flee. The king tells the men to turn the ghost gate so that the demons can't enter the city. The men flee, but the smell reminds them of the "dirty odor of greed" and "desire" that they smelled in the palace. They realize that they have no choice but to flee, because the demons are about to enter. They decide to use their "power" to control the demons and save Guineveres life.
