About This Chapter
Dr. vander tells the rest of the group that they're the ones chosen to populate the cube. They're all the same age, they all came from the same place, and they all have the same genetic makeup. They can't all be born the same way, though, because there's no room for them to be different. They have to all be the same person, or else the cube won't exist. They all agree that they need to get the last piece of the cube, which is Dr. Vander's son. He's the only one who's been born with his dna, so he'll get to keep his piece. He doesn't want his son to be the only person in the world who was born with a different genetic makeup than he is, so they've got a tracking device on both of them. The government is trying to track them down, but they'll be able to take out their own cars in front of the vander family. They don't have time to worry about that, though. The world is now twenty-five years younger than it was before, and forty-three percent of the population is gone. The vanders are the only ones who've been saved from the destruction of the world. They get the cube and walk out of there. The narrator notes that this is the first journal entry he's kept after the event. It's kind of nice to be young again, since it's so sad for those who died before he was born. He also notes that the government is about to arrest him, but that he'd better get his act together before they do. The scientists at Harvard have been using dna to store huge amounts of information in the past few years. They use a tool called crispr to copy and paste bits of information into the dna code of a living organism. The fruit fly was the first to use this technology, but it was euthanized after developing a lung disease and a severe arthritis. The next step is to create an expanded version of the genome by adding extra nucleotides to the code.
