About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of the new resident of Eden, a right-wing extremist named "Thornton" who has been hiding out in Washington, D. C., and who is responsible for many false flag operations in the U.S. The narrator tells us that "a crooked senator named McKitty hid him away, which makes him Laura shiffrons problem" . He also says that James Miller, a co-worker of Thornton's, didn't wake up from his nap, and that he thinks Thornton is mad. He tells Thornton that he was always part of the conspiracy, and Thornton should stay the bad guys win. Thornton asks for a flag, but the narrator tells him that if he starts the war back up, he'll be "the only casualty" , and he asks Thornton if he has a way to get a map and a bible back into the country, so that he can use it to track down Thornton and his confederates. He says that Thornton needs to go talk to Laura about this, and they need her to be "focused" on the matter. They also need Thornton to have a cover response to check out time, so Thornton can go and talk to her. They need him to go get a gun, but Thornton doesn't know how to do it, so they need to talk to him about it. He's scared, they say, but he's like the man they found when they first met him. They're going to have to find another way to recharge the gun, because it's constantly running. They want to go pick Thornton up at two in the morning, so he can get a ride to the city. They have a red-eye ticket for him, but they'll still give him a ride if he says no. They can't find a place to pick up Thornton, because he has to go to a hotel that's too far
