The Governess tells her daughter-in-law that the whole town has fallen in love with the Governess's granddaughter, and that she's the one who's responsible for it. She's also responsible for her brother's love for the girl, and she can't blame her for it, since she was a witness to it all. The whole town is all "damned maggots" , she says, and now they're all traitors. She begs her to open the door so they can talk things over, but she refuses, saying that the girl has already been in the room for an hour, and it's not a good sign. She tells her that the agency has already sent her the report on the whole thing, so she'll be sending it to her soon.
