About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that if he hadn't seen the man's rapid heartbeat, he might have suspected that what happened was just a matter of time. He tells us, however, that he doesn't want his family to know what's going on. He wants them to know that he's okay, and that his father is worried about him. He asks the narrator to take him back to his house, where he'll be safe from the smoke. The narrator thanks the narrator for saving him from drowning, and tells him that the property in the neighborhood will be worth more next year. He also tells the narrator that the man wants to invest in his father's business, and the narrator wonders if the man means to develop his father. He's at his friend's house, so he won't be able to go back to the house, but the narrator promises to return later. He says that the expression on the girl's face every time he teases her is priceless, and he wants to return to his own life. He wonders if it took so long for the man to make him his "complete slave" when he could have gotten rid of him, and returns to his original life.
