The school gate opens and the narrator welcomes us to the "enlightened" world of the pubescent syndrome. He tells us that this is the day that we will meet our "destined opponent" . He warns us that the clothes on the other man's clothes will have holes in them so that it is easy to identify him as our opponent. He also warns us about the fact that this man is using the "reverse five-ring reading technique" , which means that he is using five rings to read aloud from a book. The narrator is convinced that he will never lose this fight. He says that he has confidence in sports, and that he can do whatever he likes for the rest of the time. He then asks if the mosquitoes love him after school, and he says he will definitely dig for the books the man hid.
