It's been a while since we've heard from Madame Bovary, but she's back. She tells us that the new government is trying to figure out a way to treat the plague. She's also worried about the rats that are living in the sewers, since they're carrying the plague and can't be killed by the current government's methods. She wants to know what's going on with the baby, but the doctor won't tell her.
