About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the story, when the narrator explains that he is an android and that he has been living in the basement for the past two years. He tells the story of how he first revealed his identity at the funeral, and how Esther instilled in him a sense of purpose from the beginning. He explains that the first time he revealed that he was an android was when he went to the funeral. He says that Esther instilled purpose in him from the moment he was born, and that she told him that he would never be allowed to live alone because he was so smart.
