About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he's always been a "realistic and rational" person. He always pursues a "rational and realistic solution" to any problem, no matter how difficult it is. He's a good listener, he says, and he always finds a way to solve a problem. He doesn't know how to solve this one, though, because he was carrying the baby and coming to the rescue. He asks the rescuer to take the money, and the narrator says that's okay, because "good is good" . He says that even if the kidnapper and the child's father don't kidnap the child, they're evil enough to do so, because neither of them want to lose the child. The narrator is worried, but says that it seems like the situation will be resolved soon enough. He wants to find the baby, but he can't. He blames himself for the whole thing, and says that if he hadn't done it, he would have been punished for it. But now, he wants to "solve the problem that I caused" , so he goes to crawl crawl and finds the baby. He realizes that the baby is in a big place, so the baby won't be able to see him. The only way to find him is to "step and put out" the baby's body.
