In this chapter, the UM explains that he is still alive, and that he has come to sign the contract with the devil. He explains that the contract is a "first party" contract and that once the contract has been signed, the "future will happen naturally" . He says that if he were to resign from the company, he would have to do so politely and respectfully. He then says that it was time to pay the "price of the contract" , and wonders what the devil would require from him after giving him such a large sum of money.
